Directions: Read the following passage, then answer the true/false (maru/batsu) questions that follow.

At a playground:

Mariko: Konnichi-wa, Daisuke-san.

Daisuke: Konnichi-wa, Mari-chan. Nan-sai desu ka?

Mariko: Go-sai.

Daisuke: Boku wa, roku-sai.

Mariko: Sugoi. Oniisan wa, juu-sai desu.

Daisuke: Wakatta.

Note: This is an informal conversation and so the word 'desu' is often omitted by these speakers.

Unfamiliar words:

-chan: a diminutive word that originates from -san. Most Japanese attach -san to people they don't know very well or people at work/school, similar to how English speakers use Mr./Mrs./Miss in front of last names.

boku - a mostly male-used term that replaces watashi

sugoi - great/wow

oniisan - older brother

wakatta - I understand

Maru/Batsu questions:

1. Mariko and Daisuke know each other already (maru/batsu)

2. Mariko's older brother is 8 years old (maru/batsu)

3. Mariko is 5 years old (maru/batsu)

4. Daisuke is younger than Mariko (maru/batsu)
